chi poo rescue

by MITZIE on 3/8/2011 at 10:45 PM in Dog Rescue

My husband and I rescued a chi poo. We were told she was sweet and good and not aggressive. We were told she could not be cared for by elderly owners.
Wrong....her life was a nightmare...given up by her elderly owners when she was 1 1/2 yrs old, brought up in a crate with scraps thrown into her crate, never taken out on a leash- not outwardly mistreated, but nevertheless- not treated fairly or well.
Then came the endless homes, 4 in fact in 10 months- and returned due to fear biting and aggression.
We got her in November and she was nearly bald with flea dander.
I was bitten three times in a day from her- and we decided to keep her. Every dog deserves a forever home. We promised to keep her and make that forever home.
So far, we have spent nearly $1,000 in psychological/behavioral training with a wonderful woman named Christine, as well as various medical treatments for her baldness, her aggression (all natural remedies), her teeth, and other issues.
She's on my lap now, safe and happy...is there a happy ending? Not yet, she doesn't trust other adults, doesn't enjoy petting or cuddling, is fearful of other dogs, doesn't enjoy leash walks, still bares her teeth at the slightest noise or introduction into something new, fear bites at times, and hates going to the vet. There, the tech handles her with "falcon gloves"-those big leather bite proof gloves, since they are afraid of my 5 pound "vixen"- she's learning slowly that the world is not such a frightening place.
Unless socialized at an early age, I wouldn't recommend a Chi-Poo in families with children. Their small size and frailness don't exactly make them the greatest family pet to play with.
Will my little girl live out her days with love and kindness? You betcha- but it is a slow process....and we are here every step of the way.....

Dog to Adopt

by elinorp on 7/12/2010 at 1:52 PM in Dog Rescue

I am looking for a Newfoundland-Labrador cross to adopt. My daughter recently lost her best friend who was a Newfie-Lab cross. He was an amazing dog and I'd like to find another.
