My boyfriend and I, wanting to become good pet parents, attended this session sponsored by Bow & Wow at EDSA Shangri-La. It is about understanding your dog's gestures and behavior. The speaker was Ms. Elsie Araneta, a recognized dog trainer. This session was also for the benefit of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society or PAWS.
Miss Elsie discussed dogs' gestures and behavior and how to interpret them. One can tell if a dog is stressed out or happy by looking at how the dog acts. Playful wagging of the tail, dog's smile and an even shifting of weight on all four paws are signs of a happy dog. A dog looking or turning away, lip-licking, weight shifting on its hind legs mean a stressed out dog.
Today's session taught me a lot of things like never place you head near a dog's head for they do not like that at all. You might end up being bitten even by your own pet. One should also never leave toys laying around. Dogs might get possessive and be aggressive when someone tries to touch their stuff. When playing with the dogs, it is best to stop when the dog is still excited. Pet parents should take control over the game. Pet parents should be the one to start and stop the playtime.
I am looking forward to attending another session like this. :) I will try to apply the things that I learned from it as much as I can to become a better pet parent.
