FreeWay's Story & Details
FreeWay was found on highway 159 in Red Rock National Conservation Area and was in 2 homes before I was favored with his companionship. For years I thought he was a beagle lab mix because he has a beagle face but his big feet and pure white (blond) coat makes FreeWay look just like a miniature Labrador. Without fail everyone thinks FreeWay is a lab puppy. Then I had his DNA typed. To my surprise he is 1/2 cocker spaniel and 1/2 mini schnauzer....never heard of such a thing. I'm so happy to know there are others.
FreeWay's behavior is very schnauzer-like. He stops at the edge of open country and will scope out the vista for a good two full minutes, making quick deliberate adjustments with his head in order to map the environment in front of him with his ears, his eyes, and his nose. He stands on three legs and places the front right leg suspended in the air like a hunting dog. When he is satisfied with his analysis of the vista, he will then take off into the desert. At times I do not know exactly where FreeWay is but I am always confident that he always knows exactly where I am. FreeWay will chase rabbits, without success. Once and only once he did catch a chipmunk and kill it but then dropped it, looked at me, perplexed at not knowing what to do, and then walked away. His breed mix has instincts to kill but not eat his prey.

FreeWay is a truly beautifully looking animal. I am not a fan of the schnauzer look, and from his photos you can see that he has short hair sans the long facial hair.
