Bear's Story & Details
Shepachows don't bark unless the feel the need to, so my mom was hooked to Bear from the start. They also don't dig in the garden or at the bottom of fences. Bear will dig if he sees a big pile of dirt though, I found that out last summer! Bear is afraid of water, won't go anywhere near it unless he needs a drink. He will behave if I need to give him a bath though. He is a very fast learner and I trained him with hand signals only the first 2 weeks he came home. He is not a jumper, but I have seen him clear some pretty long obstacles when he needs to. I have recently taught him to jump straight up and he seems fine with that. We don't take him to dog park because he does attack dogs that are smaller than him. He gets along with the rest of my families dogs (a doberman, pit bull, and australian shepherd. There is a new great dane in the family that Bear has not met yet, so we shall see what happens then). He does not like children but won't try to bite them unless they pull his fur. He does give a warning snap if you get to much in his face. He reacts differently to people I have over, so I watch for his warning signs that I have come accustomed to and tell people when they should back up and leave him alone.
The only blood he has drawn was when he bit my uncle Gary's hand. I was asleep and my uncle had come to pick me up but I wasn't waking up so he knocked on my window. Bear was sleeping with me at the end of my bed as usual and didn't like that someone was knocking on my window. I woke up and got the door for my uncle, still half asleep, and we sat in the kitchen while I waited for some coffee. My uncle started playing with Bear, who was still tense from him knocking on my window when I was asleep, and he got in the face like he does with his own dog. I asked my uncle to back up a little cause I could tell it was irritating Bear but he said Bear was fine. He tapped his head and Bear grabbed his hand and barked before running to my feet and sitting down to guard me.
Once my friend Bayle was over, and it was Bears first time to meet her. She's tall, like me, and I guess Bear didn't enjoy that because he had his ears back and hair raised slightly. I pet him and he relaxed a little so I decided it was okay for him to be in my room with us. We were on my bed and Bear was in my lap (I swear he thinks hes a 8 pound puppy. No sir, you are 72 pounds of heavy) and Bayle was petting him. I could tell she was nervous and I was telling her to relax and Bear would relax too. That worked, but then she got in his face (on accident, she was trying to tell my something but she had to whisper it and as I mentioned before, Bear was in my lap.) and Bear snapped at her then got into his 'guarding' position that he does when he's scared.
I have worked with him and he's gotten much better at meeting new people. He still doesn't like kids but he is more accepting of new people and lets them pet him without getting nervous.
Bear is also scared of loud noises, and cries when a train passes, the alarm clock goes off, plate breaks, people yell, ect.
