Adopted Elvis!

Yesterday, I went to the Kentucky Humane Society and found a new friend. When I went in, I had a picture in my head of what kind of dog I wanted. Something medium-sized, not too rambunctious, probably 2 or 3 years old, preferably non-shedding with short hair, who was reasonably well-behaved. I went down the line of kennels and saw all of these HUGE dogs... and almost at the very end of the line was this older dog, sitting right at the end of the kennel next to the gate. His nametag said that his name was "Muffin" and that he was a 7-year-old Schnauzer mix, although I suspect he's a Schnauzer/Shih-Tzu mix. He was really calm and mild-mannered. I stuck my fingers through the cage and he completely ignored me, so I got up and looked into the next cage at the VERY end and there's this HUGE, loud, mean dog in there that snarls and jumps up at the gate. We went to go look at the puppies, and I fell in love with these three rat terrier puppies, even though their adoption fees weren't waived and I didn't have $235.00 to spend. So, I went back to "Muffin" and we took him outside and tried to get to know him. He walked around the enclosed yard and continued to ignore us. I was seriously doubting I was going to find a dog. My mom was standing next to me and she's like, "Heather, he's perfect! He's exactly what you need!" So then, "Muffin" comes up to me and starts sniffing my leg. I think by this time, he was understanding that I was considering taking him home with me. I caved in.

So we went back inside and I filled out the paperwork and they took him out the front doors for some reason and he passes me up and then turns right around on the leash once they got to the doors and tried to make a beeline for me. I finished the paperwork and everything and finalized the adoption. For $20.00, plus the cost of toilet paper and bleach, I got a dog.

On the ride home, I knew I had to change his name. I'm sorry, but saddling a male dog with the name "MUFFIN" is just cruel. I renamed him "Elvis" because of his mostly black coat and I knew my grandmother (whom I live with) would be more accepting of him, since she's a huge Elvis Presley fan.

Things are going well so far. We're still trying to get him adjusted to the other dogs... a Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix and a Jack Russell Terrier. The Jack Russell is a bit jealous, so we're working on those issues now. Wish us luck!
